| SCRAPPED: The solar pyramid proposal for Poole |
THE plug may have been pulled on the Solar Pyramid but Poole is still open to the idea of a significant tourist attraction to help boost its economy.
The debacle over the world class timepiece visitor attraction, which residents of Harbourside Park (Baiter) did not want on their doorsteps, has led the Borough of Poole to consider what else may be suitable.
Councillors, business people, tourism panel and town centre management representatives will be invited to a workshop in June.
"Members are anxious to have as much public involvement as possible," said Cllr Ron Parker, cabinet portfolio holder the local economy.
"We'll have a brain storming session with ideas and then see where we go from there," he said.
Tourism manager Graham Richardson said: "It's a session where we want people to come with their thoughts and ideas suitable and relevant for Poole.
"Then we can go out and try and encourage it or if something came along like the Solar Pyramid we can give officers the confidence to go with it or explore further."

He said there was no shopping list and they wanted to consider whether they should be trying to encourage a big attraction to the town centre or, for example, historical vessels to the quay.
"It is uncertain times with the credit situation affecting the country's economy. We want to support local business, tourism, the town centre and achieve the best way forward," he said.
A budget of £25,000 is available to explore potential tourist attractions and there would be future public consultation, he added.
The massive sundial proposal from a private company, which could have brought 400,000 visitors to the town and a £20m boost to the economy, was scrapped by the council, mainly due to residents' opposition.
David Howard, chairman of Parkstone Bay Association, said: "It might be a good idea this time to invite residents to such a meeting and avoid the fiasco of the pyramid.
"Let's have some real consultation for a change and not just a cabinet decision," he added.

How about helping Dorset fulfill its energy targets of [bold]85%[/bold] [bold]renewables[/bold] . A few 425foot wind turbines would sit very nicely down at Baiter. Joe public is so very much in love with them, they say they look graceful and feel that one has to save the world with them! Next, a giant playground wheel, that people can push and then [bold]hop on[/bold] , and as it rotates that also will create a [bold]dynamo[/bold] effect, more green electricity -- Then a [bold]tidal power[/bold] project in the harbour mouth entrance .
Poole needs a useful everlasting piece of [bold]green symbolism[/bold] , not a frivolous monument.
Perhaps a modern [bold]lighthouse[/bold] ,solar powered with a [bold]revolving[/bold] viewing platform on the top,situated down at the far end of Baiter near the car park where the small dinghies are launched.
You will be pilloried from here to kingdom come, if in these worrying financial times you squander your mended pr situation if you do not listen to your residents!

[bold]THIS WAS CLAIMED[/bold] but not proven. 400,000 visitors and £20million were figures plcked from the air by the company whose project it was, and who know nothing about Poole - so don't blame the residents for exercising common sense.

Why not build a potter on the Quay, or even an Aquarium, or perhaps have a traditional fishing fleet based at one end of the Quay, or even a traditional High Street which isn't a clone of every other town centre...

Interesting how this news was meant to be kept quiet from the general public until after the 'workshop' of ;interested parties' had already come up with their own ideas. Check out the minutes of the last Poole Local Economy Overview Group Committee and the considerations by Cllr Martin regarding approaching the public.

Should have been minuted as was major discussion. Cllr Martin questioned the rationale for why the public were not be consulted at this stage given recent previous high profile tourism projects. It would be very surprising and disappointing if not minuted.

How many more meals and freebees will the counsellors get from this new ploy of conning the Poole people?
Perhaps an attempt to clean up Poole Town and provide more toilets would encourage visitors!

Can't wait for the next local elections in Poole.
The consellors may think we have short memories but there are enough electors now who really have had enough of this dreadful council and we will be reminding the electors of the counsellors greed and stupidity.
