Leafy suburb loses out to flats scheme

IT was a night of mixed fortunes for residents in a Southbourne street when civic planners refused permission for a block of flats on their doorstep.

Celebrations quickly turned sour when members of Bournemouth council's planning board went on to approve two blocks of maisonettes on a nearby site.

Their planning officers had urged the board to approve both developments on Castlemain Avenue despite almost 100 objections from local residents.

A deputation on their behalf described the three-storey block of four flats as "a congested development, totally out of character with the street scene."

But planning officer Barry Carse said the scheme had been modified, adding: "The flats are all a good size, well lit with no overlooking problems."

East Southbourne councillor Eddie Coope voiced concern over the loss of family homes in the area and across the borough.

West Southbourne councillor Allister Russell said: "I'm against the building of flats in Bournemouth; there are too many and it has got to come to a stop.

"Half of them are not being sold; the other half are being sold to people from London as second homes; they are no use to us in Bournemouth. Castlemain Avenue was once a very nice, tree lined road."

Cllr David Smith shared their sentiments and moved that the scheme should be refused. The move was carried by eight votes to one.

However, plans for two, two storey blocks of eight maisonettes won approval.

Cllr Russell objected again stressing that six parking spaces would be inadequate.

He said: "People have to live; they should come first. They don't want to live in small hutches."

Cllr Smith said: "I'm unhappy that a leafy suburban road is becoming flatsville."

A move to grant permission was carried by six votes to two.

Fareham is at least 44 miles from Southborne plus it is a different county so I doubt very much if this affects you.

Wouldn't be so bad if they could sell what is actually built.Drive down Castlemain Avenue and count the 'For Sale' & 'To Let' signs, they seem to have replaced the trees.

Well done Ian.....Totally agree. Yes we all need somewhere to live, but I am sick to the back teeth of these ugly blocks of flats being erected where ever Greedy Money Grabbing Developers can find the smallest plot of land. We all need personal space too, and these grotesque flats are slowly strangling the life out of entire communities. There is no thought and consideration given to the surrounding environment and amenities. Our roads are choked, as are the schools and hospitals, and many other important services. If this Malignant Flat Building Virus is allowed to continue in many parts of the UK, there will be no hope for future generations to come. We will revert back to all kinds of Social Deprivation in society. This breeds, all kinds of complex illnesses and behaviour, as most people recognise, apart from, it seems, the Authorities and Central Government. Heaven help us all. (No I am not a religious person either)

There are 850,000 empty homes in England and over 250,000 of these have been empty for more than six months.

The need to build is driven by the construction industry and nothing else. The homes are already there kudos.

Near the top of Castlemain Ave there is a newly built block of eight flats with two parking places provided. These have numbers on them - 7 and 8. I wonder where the other six cars are parked, and who did the developers think they were kidding by their system of enumeration.

Who actually lives in these flats up in Southbourne? Families? Who can afford to buy one of these appartements? I have two jobs, am expected to find a handsome sum for a monthly rent on the property I rent in Southbourne, but am not granted a mortgage for even the most minute of places up there, because I am too busy paying veriouse taxes & rent!!! And, ...am not unique, most of my peers have well paid jobs and are in the same position. Seems, if you are filthy rich or basically totaly reliant on Housing Benefits, you wont be going anywhere in Southbourne, except to pay naother round of council tax!!!
