Local voters’ eyes on bigger picture

VOTER apathy and national disillusionment with Gordon Brown helped the Tories claim two by-election victories, Daily Echo readers claim.

The Conservatives' success in Queens Park and Winton East, Bournemouth came on a fantastic night for David Cameron's party.

Across the country, the Conservatives look to have secured more than 40 per cent of the vote, although they did lose control of Purbeck District Council.

Readers commenting on the Echo's website said voters felt "disillusioned" and "disenchanted".

RM of Poole said: "I think it's very sad that more than three quarters of the electorate couldn't be bothered to turn out to vote in Winton East.

"People have fought and died to gain the right to vote both here in the UK and all over the world.

"Voter apathy encourages councils and governments to feel they can do what they want. How can we complain if we haven't voted?"

Rayc said: "I agree with your sentiments, but the fact that Gordon Brown and his party are in power, despite having more votes against than for in the last general election, has led to a disenchanted electorate.

"The average person feels with both local and national politics that they can no longer influence events."

Alan Gilbert, of Bearwood, said the results were an example of why party politics should be taken out of local government.

And Christopher, Wallisdown and Winton East, said: "Because of the way things are going nationally, those who did, or could have voted, yesterday voted with the Tories because of the way Labour are running the country.

"Yet we all know that local government is entirely different from national."

This is because of the national media's smear, slander, and character defamation of Gordon Brown and Labour that was switched from Tony Blair to Gordon shortly after he became Prime Minister. It was not done immediately in case people noticed and became suspicious of the election rigging capability of the national media.

Judged by his actions, Gordon is one of the very best politicians Britain has ever had. But judged by the presentation of him by media people, he is a foul monster with no redeeming feature at all.

Will he be judged him by his actions, or the media people’s presentation of him. I think I know. Do you?

You make some really good points HAL101.
The media can easily destroy the credibility of even the best of politicians from all parties. I am still amazed at the low turnouts though. I suppose some will say that they are not affected by politics !
I wonder what world they live in ?
Perhaps voting should be compulsary >
Posted by: Benjamin, Hamworthy on 7:46pm Fri 2 May 08
"Gordon, one of the best politicians Britain has ever had."
Which part of cloud cuckoo land has HAL101 been living in? He's certainly not been living in England! Brown will go down in history as the most incompetant chancellor we've ever had. Luckily He is unlikely to last ten months as PM.
Posted by: bob, Bournemouth on 7:57pm Fri 2 May 08
Hear hear Rose. I think the points you raise far outweigh those of HAL101. That is why so many people want to leave Britain?
Posted by: Geoff, Kinson on 8:04pm Fri 2 May 08
Good to see all the blue rinse brigade coming out !
I think they had the most incompetant Chancellor !
By the way Rose, what about the pensioners fuel allowance ?
Who brought that in ?
The BIG trouble with this country is that most people are selfish and only think of themselves !
Large families taxed on their cars, Rose !
I take it you have a 4x4 ?
Posted by: HAL101, Bournemouth on 8:11pm Fri 2 May 08
Oh yeah ! right buster, let battle commence! :)

50. More pensioners in poverty than ever before - Rubbish ! thanks to the pension credit no pensioner is now in poverty. Pension credit, Rose, pension credits!

51. Highest fuel prices ever due to sky high oil tax - the tax is the same rate , it is the cost of oil that has increased the fuel prices, really Rose, do try to understand.

52. Labour popularity lowest for 40 years - loss of 291 labour councillors on 1st May 08 - thanks to the smear, slander and character defamation of Gordon and Labour by certain media people (nasty Nick)

53. Council tax bills doubled since Labour been in power - good point , which you lost among the other rubbish ones. However, the reason for this was to make councils accountable to the voter, who should vote in councillors that will end the gravy train. That has not happen this time has it? But perhaps next time.

54. Energy bill increases mean fuel poverty for 4.4 million. Gas bills up 108.6%. Electricity bills up 69.6% - again the tax is the same rate, it is the cost of oil and gas that has increased the fuel prices, really Rose, do try to understand !

55. Taxes up £110 per family per year - over 111 tax rises since 1997. My taxes have only gone up with the cost of the items. What are these tax rises that you so carelessly and wildly claim?

56. Large families taxed on their large cars with £900 pa car tax - GOOD! Great , get these gas guzzling 4x4s taxed off the road. Good old Gordon.

57. Average earnings down £215 over last 2 years alone - average earnings? Most people get pay raises every year so this claim is not very believable.

Are these the best criticisms that you have?. Surely you can find some real faults. No one is perfect. Least of all Gordon.

I await in interested anticipation.

Not the best PM - that was Tony Blair. I am a pensioner and I have nothing at all to complain about.Free bus travel, extra tax allowances, good education for my grandson, great free medical care and the knowledge that I am helping those less well off than myself.
Its great to live in Britain and all those moaners and groaners should go off to where ever they want. They will not be missed.

Thank you for those invaluable additions to my list of reasons to vote for Labour. The last is really a good one. At last Labour is taking from the very poor worthless types and giving to the rich worthies. What do we need with a Tory party now - HA!

1.4 million immigrants moved to the UK since 2004. 380,000 Uk citizens now LEAVING the UK every year for a better life abroad! (who can blame them)?

Labour's fuel tax policy means the highest fuel tax in Europe and is crippling our haulage industry. Their high percentage of tax on the cost of oil means we all pay more at the pump and on our fuel bills

100,000 more pensioners now officially live in poverty according to statistics (since Labour came to power) and in spite of pension credits

Stats show that Uk workers will take home an extra £31pm in the public sector, in 2008 yet the average family faces increases of £148 pm meaning households will be £21 billion worse off this year.

Under Labour, police, nurses, civil servants and teachers receive an average pay rise of 2.2% which is 55% less than the UK average wage rise. This is far less than the average 18% rise in utility bills predicted this year. 9 million in the UK wont receive a pay rise this year.

Half million children attending failing secondary schools. GCSE league tables show 639 out of 3000 schools dont meet Govnt's targets.

HAL101 your loyalty to the Labour party is commendable but yesterday's results speak volumes. My money's on a leadership challenge by the end of this year. David Cameron should be ordering his change of address cards as I type.....

Omegaman, despite your insults I still know many elderly people locally who are really struggling financially under this Government. What is it that you see in this government that the majority of the voting public in UK aren't seeing? Look at the polls. How many Labour councils are there compared to Tory? How have all those who voted this way got it so wrong if you are right and they are wrong? You're entitled to your opinion.

This part of Dorset must be unusual, because we have a Labour MP and in our ward 2 liberal councillors, having just lost a very effective vocal Tory champion.
the trouble with local politics it is becoming increasingly grubby and quarrelsome. Some councillors are very effective and others just do not have what it takes. The Tories in the Purbecks are losing their strength and teeth, and unless more like minded people come forward to support, and help deliver leaflets etc, we will all lose out.

We have a really simple system in Britain - of the people who choose to vote, the candidate with the most votes wins. Therefore, at the moment, I'm afraid that HAL's choice is not the most popular overall (unless all the people who didn't bother voting are all really Gordon Brown fans). It's just the way democracy works and guards against the party in power getting lazy, arrogant or inefficient as well as being a moderation method which prevents the introduction of any extreme policies. Fortunately, in this country, all we have to do is wait until the next election and convince enough people to vote the way we like .... couldn't be easier!

WITH SOME IRISH RELATIVES I MUST CONFESS THAT I ALWAYS VOTED FOR THE TATIES!
Laurie,i was a tory, but got disalusioned with the greed and conniving, what gets me,is "people" like omegaman and geoff who say that anyone who votes or supports the BNP,should leave the country, thats going over the top,and acting like Mugabe. We are all entitled to vote and support who we want and NOT be bullied.

Would the 104 people who wasted their vote in Winton East by voting for the local fascist party be kind enough to leave Bourbnemouth ASAP.
only 104 BNP leaving?

What about the others who voted BNP in West Soutbourne ward, local election 2003, 293 votes.

Poole constituency GE 2005, 547 votes.

Iford and Littledown ward Bournemouth local election 2005, 74 votes.

Iford and Littledown ward, Bournemouth 2007, 223 votes.

Alderney ward, Poole 2007. 464 votes.

West Southbourne ward, Bournemouth 2007 235 votes.

Parkstone ward 2007, Poole 414 votes

Plus winton east 2008 104 votes, which means there would be a lot of empty homes eh??

from 2,354 approx BNP supporters (give or take those who voted in 2 elections)in Bournemouth and Poole!!

some very good debates on this thread all valid depending on your circumstances in life i think. My father who is 80 has never been so well off, my husband and I are having to work just as hard now as we hurtle to retirement and my daughter and family cannot afford to buy a house. We all vote for whom is best for our personal lives rather than who benefits the country as a whole. To be honest I feel you could put all the party's in a bag and shake them up and place them all around Parliament and not notice the difference. The Labour party are a watered down version of the tories and ditto the Tories, can anyone honestly say there is much difference these days.
