Twice-price Muslim burials are scrapped
THE Borough of Poole has scrapped a policy which meant Muslims had to pay more for their graves than other locals.
Muslims believe they should be buried south-east, facing Mecca, which means they may need to take up two plots.
With the council running out of burial space, it was normal practice to charge for both plots.
But Clive Smith, head of leisure services, who is responsible for cemeteries at the council, said the policy had been reviewed.
"With immediate effect in all Poole cemeteries, if two plots are needed in order to meet the needs of personal belief or faith such as in the Muslim example, only one will be charged for," he said.
He added: "We are hoping to deliver a new cemetery serving Poole and Bournemouth and we will be jointly consulting on design in order to completely avoid such issues in the future."
Majid Yasin, imam and director of Bournemouth Islamic Centre, said: "I am grateful to the Borough of Poole for being helpful in this matter. At least they are considering Muslims.
"The council in Bournemouth treats Muslims like second-class citizens and I wish our Islamic centre was in Poole.
"The problem, however, is not whether you charge for one or two plots but whether there should be a separate cemetery for Muslims, like the Jews have their own cemetery.
"There are about 3,000 Muslims in Bournemouth. Just a few weeks ago one of them passed away and we had to send him to Bangladesh to be buried."
Canon Jonathan Martin, Chaplain for Poole, said: "At the point of grief, people should not have to worry about paying more for their grave than others.
"We should be demonstrating hospitality to other faiths.
"It's important that we make people feel welcome in our community."
Michael Edwards, head of public protection at Bournemouth council, said: "We are very considerate of all religious and secular requests concerning burials and cremations and always try to meet specific needs.
"For example, our burial service runs 365 days a year to enable burial within 24 hours in line with some religious requirements.
"Unfortunately space in our existing cemeteries is limited and we do not have a designated area for Muslim burials.
"We do strive to carry out Muslim burials without incurring extra expense for families but occasionally two graves are needed to meet specific requests and our charges reflect this.
"If we are in a position to lay out a new cemetery in the future, we hope to be able to provide sections for different religious groups that better meet their individual requirements."

I'm sorry but how on earth is it cheaper to send a body to Bangladesh for burial than to pay for 2 grave plots in Bournemouth ? I don't agree that there should be a different charge for different faiths but this is surely a choice of the family to send the body rather than an imposition due to the plot charge. Most muslim families that I know already have plots ready back in their ancestral homes where other relatives are already laid to rest. Majid Yasin does his community no favours by playing one Borough against another with this example.

If they choose to be buried in a different way they should expect to be charged appropriately.
If I go to Sainsbury's and want to buy a single kitchen roll but there are only doubles available, I will either buy the double or shop elsewhere.

My Nan and Grandad wanted to be buried together, we paid for them to have a double plot, it didn't even cross our minds to complain about the price. If you want or require a double plot then surely you should pay accordingly.
Incidently is this the same council who refused a young mother a picture of her son on his grave, shame they dont feel that this was a cause where they could have shown a little leeway.

I would have thought re-aligning an adjacent [bold]set[/bold] of plots would not be too difficult. A south-east facing grave is only taking up two spaces "on paper".
Think of a car park. If you rotate the whole of a row of the car spaces, you'd almost fit the same number of cars in.
However, my personal belief system dictates I must be buried vertically. And I expect a serious discount!

Here we go again, one rule for one and another rule for others. Why cannot other religions accept like we have to that there is at the moment a lack of burial spaces available to accommodate all religions.
If any other religion wishes to have special burial treatments then may I suggest that they buy a piece of land somewhere and implement their own burial ground.
Incidentally, if you do not like the way Bournemouth is, then move, it is easy as that

Well Chris, someone doesn't like to be intergrated. Why should anyone be charged for having a preference to the way the face in death. Why not just cremate everyone then they can be scattered into the rays of a new days sunrise, with plaques and pictures set for us to offer thanks and rememberence.
This world will only be at peace when each person is allowed to celebrate his/her on beliefs without need to force it upon others. So Mr Media stop making stories out of religious diffences, and let it be.

Hasn't it crossed any one mind in the council offices that is you use two head ends of plots for the first person then a second person can be laid to rest in the two foot ends. End result two bodies buried in the space for two bodies - why is that using extra space?

Can the privilege of being charged half price for two burial plots be extended to all religions?

When I die I want an 'Air Burial'. It's part of my religion you see.
If such a method of disposal of mortal remains were accepted in this country then what I would expect is that my executors would be charged rent on a short term lease until the remains were scavenged and dispersed, then the next person could have the plot.
On the other hand I might have to accept what's on offer wherever I happen to be residing when I die, because that is the local custom.

The Christian Religion owns most of the burial grounds, and billions upon billions of pounds worth of property around the country. For some reason I have to 'swear on the Holy Bible' when I am a witness in court, the head of the Church Of England is a person that extracts her extrememly gracious living from my taxes (and has done for hundreds of years to my ancestors), yet am have no recourse to representation by this system, and do not believe in the God around which it is all based.
How PC is that ?
Islam has more in common with Christianity than anything I or any other rational humanist proposes, so religious people - please sort it out amongst yourselves and leave the rest of us out of it. There is a great deal of history of you guys 'sorting it out' in the past involving invasions, genocide, brutal and bloody conflict and it continues to this day.
Please be done with it all very soon, there are real problems we need to get on with tackling and I don't see why we should have to deal with them whilst you all run around playing your own particular brand of Dungeons and Dragons.

Sorry I agree with the majority. If COE have to pay for a double plot so do the muslims. I am sick & tired of every department or every council cow towwing to them they need to be treated as we are & if they don't like it then you know where to go.

THIS HAS TO BE THE BIGGEST LOAD OF PC EVER.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WAIT UNTIL 2 OR 3 MUSLIMS DIE AND SWING THEM SIDEWAYS TO BURY THEM (OR MARK OUT 2 OR 3 PLOTS ACCORDINGLY).
THAT WAY EVERY-ONE IS HAPPY APART FROM THE DECEASEDS FAMILY WHO ARE SUFFERING ENOUGH ANYWAY.
IF PEOPLE WANT TO WALK AROUND WITH TENTS OVER THEIR HEADS SO BE IT!
THIS IS NO REASON TO HATE THEM OR INVADE THEIR COUNTRIES.
THE KORAN DOES NOT MENTION THIS MODE OF DRESS NOR DOES THE BIBLE MENTION THAT PRIESTS BE CELIBATE.
ALL THIS STUFF COMES FROM THE SMALL MINDED PEOPLE THAT HIGHJACK THESE RELIGIONS.

They want to live in this country, then they have to abide the way things are, and if that means paying for two burial plots then so be it. My mother and father were cremated, and then interned in a grave which holds four plots. We had to pay for that although more than likely only the two will be used. Thats the way it is, we did not moan about it.
One day it will be cremations only for all religions. We are running out of space for burial grounds unless they start digging the old ones up, which I think can happen after 50 years if one reads the Terms of the burial. But cremation will be the thing.
Me I am going to be buried at sea, being ex Navy. I shall be getting my mother in laws to dig the grave. Are you one. (only joking).
I am not making stories out of religious differences. My only qualm is this. If they live in this country, why should things be changed to suit them. If you have travelled like I have over the years, you will know this is usually unlikely to happen in foreign countries. You mention forcing religion on to others, is this not what the muslim race is doing by demanding their rights, when we in our own country cannot get them.
Look beyond your rose tinted glasses, and see the real world.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN I AM COMING BACK?
DIVINE INSPIRATION?
WHY DONT YOU TRY FOR A POSITIVE NOTE?
RELIGIOUS INTOLLERANCE AFFECTS EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE!

I find it almost laughable that anyone can even remotely class this as discrimination. If you take up 2 plots then quite simply you should pay for 2 plots!
As someone who does not hold any religious beliefs why should my council tax money go towards paying for extra cemetery space for those that do?
It's about time the government and local authorities took a stand against all these believers in Biblical twaddle (be they Christians, Muslims, Catholics or whatever) and banned religious teachings from schools in favour of a decent education where children are taught to use their own minds rather than have religion thrust upon them by their parents.
