Hauliers closes after 80 years

A NORTH Dorset hauliers firm has been forced to close after nearly 80 years of trading because of rising fuel prices and government legislation.

Staff at CB Morgan Ltd, named after founder Charles Brian Morgan, said smaller British firms were being forced to compete with non-UK companies that do not have to adhere to the Department for Transport's strict operating standards.

British-based hauliers have to take three scales of driving test to ensure that they are competent to safely manoeuvre heavy goods vehicles, are subject to speed limited transport, and pay road tax at £1,200 per 44 tonne six axle heavy goods vehicle.

Non-UK drivers do not have the same pressures, and have access to cheaper fuel in Europe, which allows them to cut their prices and gain the contracts.

Although the company in Littledown, Shaftesbury, could have battled on regardless, company director Andrew Ivey said no one could be certain there would be enough money to pay the drivers at the end of the month.

All the staff have found new jobs.

MP Bob Walter said: "It is a sad day indeed when a family-based company like CB Morgan Ltd, practically an institution in North Dorset, is forced to close.

"It may not be fair to blame rising oil prices on the government, but they are responsible for their taxation policies and for nearly all the other negative factors that have led to this company going under.

"The current unfair regulatory system forces UK hauliers to work twice as hard, and perhaps even spend twice as much, as their European competitors.

"I believe that for the sake of smaller UK transport companies, and for the safety and security of all other British road users, the Department for Transport should be making a far greater effort to enforce equal operating standards for all."

A Department for Transport spokesman said: "All HGVs have to have speed limiters to regulate their maximum powered speed to 90 kmh/56mph.

"This is in accordance with EC Directive 2002/85.

"Speed limiter fitment and functionality has to be checked at annual MOT tests - both in the UK and throughout the EU.

"All drivers have to obey speed limits in each of the Member States."

What a complete load of rubbish. A bad workman alweays blames his tools. If this company was right then every business would be bust.Companies go bust beacuse they are either bladly run or there is no market for their products. take your pick in this case and don't blame everyone else.

A haulage firm will have to deal with the immediate cost of fuel increases whilst the contract for haulage may have been negotiated many months ago with payment on a 30-60 day period. Smaller firms will always struggle in these cases and the amount of cheaper foreign labour and trucks coming into the UK has distorted the market. A fully loaded truck coming in will be looking for a load to shift on the return leg, whether that be out of the country or within the country. Add to the fact that livestock shipments are also far less than before and you can see how a smaller firm would struggle. It is unfair to say it was a badly run firm without looking at the wider issues that the industry is dealing with.

Why on earth is someone in London commenting on an article in a local paper in Bournemouth if they are not sponsored by the industry and working for the Tory Party.

How dare anyone blame this goverment,Omegaman is an expert, although he knows nothing about this firm,he gives judgement, guess who he supports (no prizes).his comment that firm is badly run is defamatory, which is against the rules and terms of use.

"A NORTH Dorset hauliers firm has been forced to close after nearly 80 years of trading because of rising fuel prices and government legislation." How on earth can you argue with that? It's damned obvious who's to blame...how they have run for 80 yrs successfully and now not..hardly a co-incidence is it when everyone is suffering at the hands of this greedy government. Rip Off Britain PLC!!

How can anyone possibly state that a company of 80 years standing cannot blame the present situation forced upon them.

But then some respondents to these columns do not pick up on the story as it is, but post just to cause more problems.

Such a sad life some have. Appropriately as we are talking of haulage, tanker springs to mind, or is it w****r.

Before you do in your head
Or become totally brain dead
If you look under your bed
You will find less than 3 who are red!

Sweet Dreams, old chap!

I think it might be The Banker that you and C B Morgan are struggling with. Fuel or No Fuel?

I thought at first how could anybody be so stupid, omegaman must be as thick as two short planks he is not just stupid but ignorant as well to comment on something he knows nothing about. Then I realised he is just a s**t stirring wind up merchant.

I disagree with Omegaman. My husband is a UK truck driver who drives all over Europe. How can UK firms compete with EU transport companies until there is a level playing field.Generally NO trucks can drive in France on a Sunday. The EU trucks fill up with French diesel at Calais, catch the Sat night ferry to the UK, drive all day on Sunday on french fuel contributing nothing to UK road tax and returning to EU for Monday morning. All day in Uk earning and contributing nothing to our economy. Whereas my husband will have spent all day sat stationary in a truck stop. If my husband gets a speeding ticket in France he will be stopped at the border and payment will be demanded. EU and especially Eastern EU trucks are not pursued whatsoever by the British authorities for speeding offences.

Sorry, did not realise that an open forum required me to live within a specified area to comment ? Regardless of that, like PeeGee I was born and bred in Dorset, spent 30 years of my life there, have all my family there and left to work elsewhere. So what ? My political views and field of employment are none of your concern and do not prevent me from making a comment that may be different to your opinion. You appear to revel in taking a contrary view and stirring up controversial opinion so should welcome anybody that adds fuel to your fire.
